101 days until the California International Marathon!! Today was my speed training day; and I got a new 5k PR!! Check out my run on Garmin Connect:

This is my happy face when I get a new PR

Great run today…and it was 91 degrees out! Unless it is 105+ degrees out I don’t think it is too hot to run. But that’s just me.

20130829-192951.jpg

Now, I know I’ve said this many times but I am going to say it again: I am SO proud of myself for sticking to my CIM Training Schedule. I have not missed 1 day! There are a few days I’ve had to change up what I am doing but I’ve never missed a day of exercise. I have missed some rest days – which I know can be just as bad as missing training days. Sometimes I get a little obsessed with training. I have had a bit of knee pain lately so I am taking it easy and sticking to my rest days. I don’t want the same issues as last year.

20130829-193007.jpg

I finally purchased some weights!!! $150 for all this on craigslist. Damn good deal. I feel like it is going to help so much with my training! I haven’t had a gym membership now for about 2 1/2 months. I have to say I am doing pretty damn good at maintaining my exercise routine, gaining muscle and losing weight all without a gym. I love being my own personal trainer! Speaking of personal training…I’m off to study. Happy running!

That’s What I Think It’s All About

Have you ever had one of those days where you feel ugly, fat, no amount of exercise and eating well is getting you the results you want to see? I had one yesterday. Not fun. I exercise 4-6 days a week. I am currently running 15-25 miles a week. I eat well, occasionally have a beer or some wine; I love food so I will eat pizza, cheese, french fries…but for the majority of the time I consider food as fuel and I want/need the proper fuel for my body so that is what I give it.

So why am I not seeing the results I want? Or faster? I want my arms so tone that you can see the muscle without me flexing, I want the fat on my hips gone and my inner thighs, I want a flat tummy. I feel like I’m “skinny fat”. I am not fat, but I do have fat on me that I want gone! These are all the things I was complaining to my boyfriend about after skipping out on our workout last night – which I also was upset about – I just didn’t feel like working out. Why? I love working out, it always makes me feel good…now I’m feeling guilty for not wanting to!

Then he pointed out to me:

I’ve lost 15 lbs in the last 7 months

I am stronger than he is (based on our workouts – I can keep going when he is tired)

I have dedication to continue to work out and get in shape

I am pursuing my personal trainer certification

Then I realized:

I woke up at 5:40 this morning – I never get up that early. I did to get my work out in because I knew in the evening I wouldn’t have time. Also, all my splits were under 9 minutes. Last lap 8:06 mile? Hell yea, That is good for me!

20130822-125656.jpg

Still, I was unhappy about my results and my choices that day. I have a tendancy to worry about things, think & over analyzie and focus on all the negatives even though they are far outweighed by positive things. I have a million thoughts always going through my head; I feel like I need to be doing something at all times. It can be exausting being me in my head! My boyfriend said something else that really made me stop and think: We are in our 20’s (well, I’m 29 and that is almost 30 and of course I had to point that out & of course he had to say “that is still in the 20’s”) we have the rest of our lives to work out, get in shape, enjoy everything while we’re doing it and just enyoy our lives, that’s what I think it’s all about.

Maybe I don’t take time to enjoy everything while it’s happening. I’m too busy with what I am doing and focusing on what to do next that I don’t focus on being happy. Not that I am unhappy, but sometimes he has to remind me of my accomplishments and goals I am setting for myself and I should be proud of what I’ve done. I went from no running to running multiple half marathons, 5 & 10k’s, and marathons all in less than 2 years. Friends and strangers (thanks to my blog!) have told me what an inspiration I am and that makes me feel great! I am now doing even more with that and am on my way to becoming a personal trainer. I know he is right when he says I am too hard on myself and don’t give myself enough credit. I just want things to be/go perfectly 100% of the time. Is that too much to ask? ๐Ÿ˜‰

He is the best โค

I f-ing love him!

Running In Sacramento – Murals

Today was my long run for the week. I woke up at 5:40am! Yay for me…I mean, I woke up to pee but I had to be up in 10 minutes anyway so I decided I may as well get ready. I was a little worried for this run because I was out of my GU Roctane Energy Gel ย (mistake number uno) so I went to the Dollar Tree (mistake number dos) to get some gummy bears. Here is some advice: If you are going to use gummy bears for fuel for a long run go to a regular grocery store & buy the brand name gummies. The Dollar Store gummy bears tasted like plastic. Nasty. Nevertheless, I feel like they did their job. I will, however, be stocking up on GU Gels. I just don’t care for the idea of eating candy when I’m running; not to mention I don’t really like candy.

Check out my long run!

On my run today I took a lot of pictures (some of these are from previous runs) of murals. Sacramento has some great art through out the city. Its fun to see, take pictures of and just enjoy. It makes the city unique; other cities do this as well, but I especially like the art that is unique to Sacramento.

Like this one:

I like this one because it reminds me of my sister. We drove by it one day & she mentioned that she liked it.

20130819-110530.jpg

This I find HILARIOUS! It is on the side of an apartment building. Why? I feel like only crazy cat ladies can live here…hey, maybe its perfect for me!

20130819-110539.jpg

This is a colorful one on the side of a market

20130819-110547.jpg

This one is HUGE! And my favorite part of it is the cute pug ๐Ÿ™‚

20130819-110623.jpg

Kinda strange & gross, you can’t really see them in this picture but there are maggots with a rotting apple tree. Still cool though.

20130819-110641.jpg

I like the owl.

20130819-110648.jpg

This is a really pretty colorful mural on a building on 16th & J

Has anyone seen the movie Candyman??

20130819-110718.jpg

I love the colors in this one, especially the green.

20130819-110755.jpg

ATTENTION: If you wan the BEST fried chicken wings of your life come here!! Sandra Dee’s BBQ. Amazing! I also love all the blues/soul/jazz singers they have painted on their building. Seriously, how cool is this?!

20130819-110732.jpg

Another cool musician one. This is on the side of a hair salon.

20130819-110803.jpg

The main reason I decided to do my “Running In Sacramento” posts is to show how great this city is! Sometimes I feel like it gets a bad rap. When I moved here a few people asked why and said it was a dirty city full of crime. I don’t know what city they are talking about (okay, it has its homeless issues & crime but what city doesn’t?) but it isn’t as bad as some people think. First off – there are races just about every month in or around the city, the running community here is awesome! We have rivers, parks, theater, basketball (for now), baseball, museums, yummy food & drinks…Sacramento is close to the mountains and close to the coast. I โค it here!

Keep checking back for more running in Sacramento posts, I have some good ones coming!

The Daily Runner

By: Haley Gonzalez

Weโ€™ve all heard of โ€œfun runsโ€, maybe even ran a few ourselves. They seem to be everywhere and there is every kind of run you can think of. From color runs to mud runs and neon runsโ€ฆthe list goes on. I myself have participated in 3. My first was the Merrill Down & Dirty Mud Run, then the Color Run and there was the Mud Blast. I have found that I prefer the more traditional races; you know, where people actually run โ€“ not dance, wave around neon lights, make color angles or wear 80โ€™s prom clothes.

1

This is how I feel about races: I am a more traditional runner. I am competitive (with myself). I LOVE to RUN.ย  I donโ€™t wear headphones when I run its too distracting. If there is a timing option for a race I pay the extra money for the timing chipโ€ฆ

What This Runner Eats

I received an email from Runner’s World about nutrition for runners. I’m always wanting to know healthy things for me to eat pre, during and post run so I was excited to read the article Nutrition For Runners – 25 Snacks For Runners It can be hard to make nutritious meals for yourself (especially working 10 hour days, training and trying to have a social life). This is a good list of easy snacks.

I try to pre make my lunches for work as I’m making dinner the night before. Or I’ll make a big dinner and take left overs for lunch. I eat about 4-6 meals a day: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner. Easy quick snacks are a plus for me.

Here is a pretty average day for me. Breakfast: Blackberry, almond milk protein shake. Sometimes I add greek yogurt if I have it.

20130810-142145.jpg

A snackie that I love are these Think Thin bars. I used to get a lot of different flavors, but the only one I really enjoy now is the dark chocolate. This is a protein bar…not a candy bar claiming it is a protein bar. There is 20g of protein per serving (serving size is a whole bar) and NO sugar!

20130810-142153.jpg

I also like Think Thin bars because if I want something sweet they help me avoid crap like this at work

20130810-142201.jpg

This is another snack. I picked this up at Nugget Market – easy enough to make at home. Chicken salad, grapes, cucumber and a few Ritz Crackers. Yum.

20130810-142209.jpg

This I also got at Nugget and it is also easy enough to make. It is a Thai chicken salad. Chicken, bell peppers, cilantro, and cabbage. This was my lunch. I need more vegetables in my diet so I am trying to have a salad for at least one of my meals.

20130810-142215.jpg

Finally for dinner my boyfriend (he’s the best) made this for us. I got the recipe from Pinterest, here is the recipe Herb & Citrus Oven Roasted Chicken . The only thing I would change is not using the olive oil. Too oily, and it’s really not needed because the lemon and orange juice make the chicken nice and juicy.

20130810-142226.jpg

Had some asparagus and wine with dinner. It is possible I went a little too heavy on the cheese, but I love cheese!!

20130810-142232.jpg

As you can see I ate pretty well today. But trust me, I have my days where I only want to eat french fries, hamburgers, pizza, cheese and beer/wine. We’ve gotta give ourselves those days! (at least I know I need them!) If I know I am going to be eating something like that I’ll exercise a little extra that day before I do. I also don’t eat like that all day it will usually be just one meal.

Here was my run today. It was my first run in 5 days. I was taking a little break because I had a some foot pain. After resting and new SuperFeet Insoles I think I’ll be okay! This run was fun, my sister and I ran together. She is improving as a runner, but we still had to take a few walk breaks ๐Ÿ™‚

CIM Training Short Run – 4 miles by haleymg at Garmin Connect – Details.

Plan B

Today I was supposed to run 3 miles. I have been having some foot pain recently (this happened last year as well) so I’ve decided to take the week off – sad face. I will try running agin on Saturday. My foot felt fine today, but I didn’t want to risk it. Hardest part of R.I.C.E. for me? REST!!

Instead we dropped my boyfriend’s bike off at Mike’s Bikes in downtown Sac and headed to the gym park for a work out.

I love the sign cause of the bike chain ๐Ÿ™‚

20130807-212110.jpg

I want a new bike!!!

20130807-212116.jpg

I wore my awesome shirt that I got from Fleet Feet Fair Oaks โค
Today’s workout was upper body. I try to make it challenging, but not too hard (my bf and sister are new to this so I’m being easy on them) but today kicked my ass! I’ll be feeling it tomorrow! Ps does anyone else LOVE being sore from your work out the next day? Or even the second day after, that is even better! Check out my instagram for pics and videos from today’s work out and bike ride. I’m pretty obsessed with instagram videos now ๐Ÿ™‚ I Am A Runner Girlย

CIM Training: Day 58 of 182

Can I just say how proud I am of myself this time around? Last year my CIM training was awful (I hate to admit that, but I was a major slacker). This year I have done everything on my training schedule plus some! I feel strong, healthy, fit and happy. Knowing what I went through last year with my knee injury has really helped me stay on track. I don’t ever want to go through that again! Seeing some muscle definition has helped keep me on track with my strength training – about time!!

My run today was 9 miles; I ran to William Land Park. I have run around the park a few times, but I have never ran there from my place. Since I had to run 9 miles I figured today would be a good day to do that. Here is my route:

CIM Training Long Run – 9 miles by haleymg at Garmin Connect – Details.

This isn’t the greatest picture but I love the style they chose for the entrance (one of the many) to this park.

20130805-113845.jpg

William Land Park is HUGE! There are so many things to do and so many running trails. I should run here more often!

20130805-113902.jpg

Okay, so I am a little old and behind on things because I just recently discovered the Vine app. I decided to use it to show fun (at least to me) videos of my runs, training and cats – there are no cat videos yet but trust me there will be. Here is the link to check me out: My Vine Videos. Today I posted some running videos…not flattering but hey, who looks good running?

Disregard the above paragraph…my friend informed me of instagram videos, which I knew about, but did not know they did the same thing with the looping. SOOO check out my instagram! I’ll post some fun videos soon – and cat videos :)See, I am old!
