R.I.C.E.

Yesterday I started my taper for the California International Marathon. The plan was to run an easy 12 miles. Unfortunately, I’ve been having a bit of knee pain and my run was cut to 4.36 miles. I know I’m supposed to taper, but damn! This is craziness! My knee started feeling sore late last week and over the weekend it progressed. It wasn’t super painful to the point of stopping but being as close to the CIM (18 days!!) as it is I am NOT going to risk an injury again! I have trained too hard and have put my heart into all my training for the past 5 1/2 months to F it up.

I guess R.I.C.E. it is šŸ˜¦ Which means I am taking this entire week of off running. The funny – or stupid & frustrating – thing is, my knee feels great today and I am tempted to do my run tomorrow. But I won’t…gotta stay strong and just take this week off. This won’t be easy.

The good thing about my run yesterday was seeing the Salmon spawning! I ran along the American River and noticed birds everywhere. I couldn’t figure out what was going on until I saw all the Salmon! It was really amazing to see. I probably watched for about 15-20 minutes. Here are some pictures, although they don’t capture how cool it was to see in person.

Vultures were everywhere!

Okay…so no running this week, light on the cross training…and 18 more days until the California International Marathon! I’ll get over this little bump in the road and kill the CIM!!

  1. Don’t worry too much about the last few weeks before the race. You’ve been working hard for months. You will do great. A week off won’t hurt your fitness. Let that knee get better so you can kill it!

Hopefully CIM won’t be a rainy mess like last year!
    Good luck Haley.

  2. Haley, I have not been following you very long, but I immediately felt a kinship…you have spent a long time, training hard to reach your goals, and even setbacks don’t diminish your determination or your enthusiasm; you demonstrate what it takes to make dreams come true…something I needed to hear as i struggle through an injury just weeks before my first marathon.

I wanted to share your spirit with others, so I have nominated you for a Sunshine Award. Please stop by my blog and check it out – you deserve it!

    • Thanks so much! It means a lot to hear people enjoy your blog, or you’ve inspired someone…or just hearing that I’m doing a good job!! Good luck in your training & races.
