Marathon Training, Wine Tasting, Medal Hanger & Cat Friends

Napa Valley Marathon is 35 days away! I am so excited cats to be running in Napa, my hometown! Training is going very well and I feel strong & positive about how this race will go. However, I have been reading Hansons Marathon Method and I am realizing after this marathon I need to take my marathon training to a whole other level…that is a different post though.

Here is my long run from today:

NVM Training Long Run – 10.8 Miles by haleymg at Garmin Connect – Details.

As I stepped out the door to run this morning I saw my neighbor was having a garage sale. I looked around to see what was there and found this:

Why am I so excited for this? Because as soon as I saw it I knew it was going to be my medal hanger!! I have been looking for months at pinterest, google, running sites…of how I was going to display my medals. Crazy that I just walk out my door and find something perfect for it!

As I am writing typing this my boyfriend is putting it up…

I am also enjoying some coffee. That’s right, I’m a coffee drinker now. And like my beer, I will be a snob. Currently I am drinking coffee from Naked Lounge in midtown Sac, no cream or sugar. Just black please.

It is so perfect❤️❤️

The bed frame that I bought to use for my medal hanger is so big we are going to use part of it for a wine rack. My boyfriend’s idea. It is going to be awesome! This couldn’t have come at a better time since we just signed up for Borjon Winery’s wine club! BEST Amador winery.

I’ve never been wine tasting in Napa – I REALLY need to! But I used to live in Amador County and the wine there has really stepped up its game. This weekend was my best friend’s birthday so we went tasting. Good times!

Bray Vineyards

Helwig Winery. Amazing views, wine…no bueno.

Finally, my training today. Ran by these cat (friend) statues downtown. How cool are these? Obviously I had to have my picture taken with them. Can someone say crazy cat lady?

Best cat friend face ever!

I Failed PE

Yep, I failed PE in high school. People always ask me, “How do you fail PE?” – by not giving a shit and not showing up to class. It is pretty damn easy. I moved recently and found my high school year books. While looking through my senior year book I found something that made me laugh. My PE teacher signed my book and wrote something about he wished I would have shown up to class more and to watch my mouth ( I guess I’ve had a bad mouth for a while). Now, the fact that I skipped PE all the time and cussed too much isn’t funny, what I think is funny (ironic?) is that for the past 5 months I have been studying to become a personal trainer. Today I passed my exam and am now certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine! I am super proud of myself! I wonder what my PE teacher would think of me now 🙂

I texted my friends about passing my test today and my favoritest friend in the whole universe was super excited for me and wants me to train her. Unfortunately, we live about an hour away but I am going to put together a plan for her and we will try to see each other once a month so I can see her progress. My first client!

Prune Juice!!

I got all excited cats about passing my exam today that I happened into a Barnes & Noble ❤️ and purchased this book. On sale…why not? And my core is such a problem area for me!

Speaking of problem areas, I have to admit, when I passed the test I got nervous. Nervous because I am still not as fit as I want to be. I have fat on my hips and stomach that I want gone. I don’t have as much muscle definition in my arms as I’d like…the list goes on. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone want me to train them?” I’ve seen other trainers. Muscular, strong, they seem to have much more self-control with their diet than I do…that list goes on too. I started to feel sad. Why do I do this to myself? Then I thought, I care about fitness & people. Since 2011 I have trained myself to become a runner. I have a sub 2 hour half marathon PR, I beat my marathon PR by 1 hour and 25 minutes, I’ve lost 20 lbs, gained muscle & strength…I’ve done a lot. And I’ve done most of it on my own. I cancelled my gym membership last year & bought equipment to workout at home or parks around the city. I’m dedicated. I love fitness and I am super looking forward to helping others get fit. I think that is why someone would want me to train them.

A few other purchases I’ve made recently. I have some reading to catch up on since I’m done studying.

Don’t forget! Every Wednesday meet us at the McKinley Park Library. 6:30 am – be there or be square, and lazy!

Run For Meg

Today I ran for Meg Cross Menzies. If you haven’t heard, she is a runner who was killed on January 13th while on her morning run. She was hit  by a drunk driver. A friend started a Facebook page for Meg and it will soon be a website dedicated to the memory of Meg and to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. Here is the Facebook link for now: Meg’s Miles .

This broke my heart when I read about it. Obviously I don’t know Meg, but this could easily have been some one I know or even me. I am very aware of my surroundings when I run; I never listen to music and I am extra careful around traffic. Even with being careful there was  a time I was almost hit by a car because the driver ran a red light. So runners, please be careful out there. Even though we don’t all know each other it still hurts to hear when a member of the running community was injured or killed. My heart goes out to her family.

I ran 4 miles for Meg today, and it was a beautiful run! I ran with some very nice ladies this morning, Katie and her friend. I follow Katie on twitter and this was the first time we met. Thanks for the great run today!

I broke in some new running shoes!

Here was our run along the American River today:

NVM Training Short Run – 4 Miles by haleymg at Garmin Connect – Details.

Like I said, it was a beautiful day for a run…

In remembrance of Meg & to raise awareness about drunk driving. This run is for you Meg, and every January 18th I will run for you.

SRA Come Run Series: January

Have I said lately how much I love Sacramento? Well today I participated in something that I can add to my list of reasons why I love this city. I have always loved how runner friendly this city is, but the Sacramento Running Association has taken it to another level. They have started something called Come Run Series. It will be a free run, once a month different places around Sacramento. It ranges from a 5k to 10k – today the course was 4.22 miles. You can do more or less if you want. Here is the route for the run SRA run today: NVM Training Long Run 1 of 2 – 4 miles by haleymg at Garmin Connect – Details.

I LOVE THIS! Thank you SRA for this great opportunity! Today they gave away shirts from previous races, raffled off an entry into this year’s California International Marathon (nope, didn’t get it 💔) and were collecting shoes to benefit Shoes For Sacramento. Please click this link to check out all the info on the SRA website: Come Run Series 2014

I spy…me and my boyfriend. Freezing! But once the run started I was glad I wore shorts.

So, my Napa Valley Marathon Training continues. After today’s run with the Sacramento Running Association I had planned on doing 8 more miles since I’m due for 12 today. But I just wasn’t feeling it and finished 4 miles for a total of 8 today. Oh well. Here is today’s second run: NVM Training Long run 2 of 2 – 4 miles by haleymg at Garmin Connect – Details.

I did get in a workout at home though. Cats as my witness…

They like to watch me exercise.

They also like to watch me eat & tried to get my yummy cheese (from Cultured & Cured), salami & beer (from Corti Bros. and Ruhstaller – F yea). 3 more reasons right there why I love Sacramento!

Finally, I wanted to talk about a few things I am participating in this year. I signed up for Run This Year. It is another awesome community of runners. We are setting goals of how far we are going to run this year: 2,014 miles, 2,014 kilometers or any other distance you want! I am going for the kilometers, which I think I can easily do. I have never counted how many miles I run in a year so this will be interesting. Check out their link here and sign up! Run This Year 2014

And don’t forget about the newest running group in Sacramento! Every Wednesday morning get your ass out of bed and get in your run!
