2XU Hyoptik Thermal Running Tights – A Review

Disclaimer: I received 2XU Hyoptik Thermal Running Tights to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

I love a good pair of running tights and the 2XU Thermal Compression Tights do not disappoint. I love compression gear! I feel it helps with my recovery, especially after a long/hard run or strength training. To get a good idea of how these tights could benefit fellow runners I tested them out in different conditions and different aspects of my training.

What makes these different from other compression tights I have are 2 things:

  1. They are reflective
  2. They are thermal

I often run early in the morning, when it is both dark and cold. As you can see in the picture below you can’t be missed running at night in these. Love it!

Personally, I get really hot when I run. I also live in California and just moved to San Diego a few days before getting these thermal tights so these being thermal isn’t a huge necessity for me the majority of the time. However, my first week as a Southern California resident my bf and I decided to go camping at Joshua Tree. For those that don’t know what Joshua Tree is, it is a desert. Very beautiful and I had a great time exploring, bouldering and being outdoors. For those that also think deserts are hot and this wouldn’t be an ideal place to test out these tights, think again.

It was freezing. Literally. It actually may have even been below freezing when the sun went down. To see how well these pants really kept me warm I changed into some regular running tights and the cold stung my legs. Yep. These thermal tights will keep you nice toasty when you need it most.

Yes these are running tights, but as I mentioned I tested them out during other aspects of training. Here I am doing deadlifts wearing my tights. I train in my garage, and this was a cooler morning and they kept me very comfy. The allow for a good range of motion, they don’t feel restrictive and again, I think they really help with my recovery.

What I like about the 2XU Thermal Compression Tights

  • They do what they are intended to do. Keep you warm, and make you more visible in the dark.
  • While they are effective thermal pants, they are not bulky. Good range of motion for many types of activities.
  • They fit well. These have a mid-rise waist. I find mid-rise more comfy.
  • Help with recovery.

What I dislike about the 2XU Thermal Compression Tights:

  • No side pocket. They do have a little pocket in the waist that can hold a key and chapstick. This no side pocket goes for the majority of running tights. Why no side pocket!? Only one brand have I found that fits well and has side pockets – they will remain nameless here, but 2XU, if these had side pockets I would love them 100%!

Only 1 thing about these pants that I didn’t like, if I were you I’d go grab a pair! And be sure to join me and the rest of the BibRave crew & fellow BibRaver’s on Twitter for BibChat this Tuesday, January 26th at 6pm PST!
